| Austrian Winter Peas - Pisum arvense- Germinates in cooler soils, withstands temperatures to at least 10°F. It is a good weed competitor, does well in heavy soils, and fixes 70-125 lb of Nitrogen/acre. It matures early (in April in warm areas), attracting beneficial insects. If Austrian winter peas are left in until they flower in May, nitrogen fixation may be even higher, up to 200 lb per acre. Mow or roll the crop to kill it after flowering, especially if grown with rye for support, acts as a mulch. Seeding Rate: Sow in early to mid-fall at 2-3 lb/1,000 sq ft or 88-130 lb/acre. | Barley (OG) - An excellent cover crop for spring, summer, fall and into the winter. It dies at 130F. Seed sown in the fall will hold soil and be easy to work in the spring. | BUCKWHEAT (OG) Fagopyrum esculentum- Annual, 8" to 3’ tall, non-legume warm weather cover crop. Has an allelopathic action that suppresses weeds and it's flowers attract beneficial insects. Accumulates insoluble phosphorus for release to plants later. Planted early, it is an excellent trap crop for thrips during bloom of fruits and vines. | Crimson Clover - Trifolium incarnatum- Bright crimson spikes on 18" plants. Cold and shade tolerance, reseeds, good for erosion control, cover crop, landscaping, and good for pasture. It fixes 80 lb of Nitrogen per acre. Seeding Rate: in Fall at 1/4"-1/2" depth at 1/2-1 lb/1,000 sq ft or 20-44 lb/acre. Crimson clover grows well with rye. Requires inoculant. |

| HAIRY VETCH (OG) - Vicia villosa- Hardy, viny, winter annual legume, attaining a height of 24 inches when planted alone and higher when planted with a tall companion crop that provides structural support for climbing. Plant in the fall, cold tolerant, flowers in April and ripens seed in May-June. Used as a cover crop, green manure, pasture, silage, and hay. It is capable of contributing large amounts of soil organic matter and nitrogen to a following crop. Seeding Rate: Most farmers plant hairy vetch at 30-40 lb/acre when sown alone, and 25 lb/acre when sown with rye. | Spring Oats (OG) - Recommended for planting in early spring ahead of late-summer/fall vegetables, or in August as a fall cover crop that will die down over winter for early spring cultivation. | Winter Rye (OG)- An excellent source of organic matter, grows in marginal soils, reduces erosion and has an allelopathic action that suppresses weeds. Good at mopping up and conserving leftover nitrogen from heavily fertilized or manured crops. Winter hardy to 20 to 40F. Seeding Rate: 2.5 lb/1,000 sq ft or 100 lb/acre when sown alone, or 1.2 lb/1,000 sq ft 50-60 lb/acre when sown in mixture with a winter annual legume.
